Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a Great Place to Call Home

If someone asked us to describe Fort Lauderdale in one word, we would have to say "water." Of course, the first impression would be, "oh yes, the famous beaches."

It's not just beaches actually, although it's true that Fort Lauderdale is proud of its seven miles of beautiful beaches. The "water concept" is based on two elements: one, it is known as the "Venice of America" - its intricate canal system would make fascinating study. There are about 165 miles of waterways. Two, yachting seems to sum up the lifestyle of this city, proof of which most of the jobs here cater to tourism. There are supposedly over 100,000 jobs in the boating industry alone.

Fort Lauderdale is booming. Activity in Las Olas Boulevard is frenetic - numerous hotels and high rise condos are being built. The population mix is as metropolitan as you want it. As of the 2006 census, Fort Lauderdale had about 185,000 residents. They are served by many elementary and high schools, although residents who are interested in pursuing higher learning can pick any one of the five institutions: Broward Community College, Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University, The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and Nova Southeastern University.

One interesting point is that Fort Lauderdale was built with many fort-like structures, an idea sparked by the Second Seminole War, also known as the Florida War (1835 to 1842). The Second Seminole War goes down in history as the largest and most expensive war between North American Indians and the US government.
